This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard body horror, but beneath Together exists a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
