McDonald's has removed a Christmas advert produced with generative AI after encountering considerable online backlash.

The 45-second film was created via AI video tools and was initially published online for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.

Audience Response and Decision to Pull

Following its publication, commenters denounced the employment of AI in the commercial. Several called it "creepy" and "jarringly assembled".

"This moment serves as an important learning as we explore the effective utilization of Artificial Intelligence," commented a representative from the company.

The advert was created for McDonald's by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It portrayed a series of scenarios that often go badly during the festive season, under the theme "not the most wonderful time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI in Advertising

Campaigns that include AI tools have emerged as a growing trend among prominent companies, notably for the Christmas season.

  • Another beverage giant has also launched consecutive AI-generated holiday ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: As segments created using generative AI are more likely to degrade the more extended they are, the majority of such clips tend to be only six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also sparked worries about the replacement of human roles in the advertising industry, with some critics noting it might reduce work for actors.

Response from the Production Company

Following the ad being taken down, The Sweetshop's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, defended the project.

Bridge claimed, the creation required "over a month and a half" and involved creating "countless iterations" which were then edited in post-production "just as we would on any high-craft production".

"This wasn't an experiment," Bridge asserted. "The result was a proper commercial."

Mixed Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was predominantly panned, the reception for other AI-generated campaigns has been divisive.

For instance, a recent AI-generated Christmas spot from another major brand according to analysis garnered a 61% "positive feedback" from viewers.

However, several companies have likewise faced scrutiny for employing the technique in their campaigns. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that critics called "lazy" and "uncanny".

The episode highlights the ongoing conversation within the advertising and production sectors about the balance between new tools and human craftsmanship.
