Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not only his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
